Ukrainian-Russian relations were among the topics discussed at the meeting of the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation headed by Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, with Norbert Lammert, President of the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The President of the Bundestag
considers improvement of Ukrainian-Russian relations as the most important
factor of stability in the Eastern Europe
which absolutely corresponds to the interests of the European Union. Mr Lammert made this statement, summarizing the discussion.
The Parties focused their attention on the ‘Kharkiv agreements´ between Ukraine and Russia. Mr Lytvyn stated that apart from the positive foreign political consequences, conclusion of Kharkiv agreements made it possible to settle a range of domestic issues, unblock the budgetary process, and increase predictability of economic development and economic principles of price formation in the energy supply sector.
Mr Lytvyn stated that the most significant feature of Kharkiv agreements was that they had been reached without detriment to the sovereignty and national interests of Ukraine. However, Mr Lytvyn stressed that Ukraine should form "an integral and comprehensive platform for the long-lasting development of Ukrainian-Russian relations" to satisfy the interests of Ukrainian public and unite political forces.
Mr Lytvyn believes that predictable relations between Ukraine and Russia grant Ukraine a possibility to focus its efforts on the achievement of the main foreign political objective accession to the European Union.
As it was reported, on 16-17 June, Volodymyr Lytvyn, Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, pays an official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany.
Today, Ukrainian parliamentary delegation headed by Mr Lytvyn met Ruprecht Polenz, Chairman of Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs, and the Committee members. The People´s Deputies of Ukraine also met the Ukrainian participants of the International Parliamentary Practice.
